Specialist Music

Ms V is a talented musician and teaches music as a specialist subject at Oranga School. Her background is in drumming having played in many Auckland bands and teaching the drum kit privately. She also learnt guitar for many years and easily applies these skills to the ukulele. She loves leading the school Kapa Haka.
Music lessons always begin by singing popular songs that the students enjoy. This is followed by various activities teaching the students to read musical notation (notes). Students then explore creative composition and performance which builds teamwork and confidence. All students learn basic chords on ukulele and keyboard while also taking on rhythmical challenges such as bucket drumming and applying notes to various percussion instruments.
The students eventually work in groups to learn popular songs on ukulele, keyboard and glockenspiel. Playing as an ensemble is an important conclusion to most lessons.
Ms V is passionate about sharing the joy of music with students and helping them discover their own creativity.
Our music programme offers students the opportunity to learn a variety of instruments, read music, perform as an ensemble and express creativity through composition. Students build on their skills by working individually, in groups and as a whole class. Music is taught following four interrelated strands: Understanding the arts in context, Developing practical knowledge, Developing ideas, Communicating and interpreting.
Specialist Art
At Oranga School, our ākonga enjoy a rich programme of specialist art lessons that are an integral part of their learning journey. Students are encouraged to explore, take creative risks, and express themselves through a wide range of art forms. Each term they engage with different media and artistic styles—such as portraiture, painting, pastels, printmaking, collage, and sculpture—while building confidence and skill. They learn key artistic techniques alongside an understanding of the elements and principles of art, ensuring every child has the opportunity to experience success and creativity in a vibrant, inclusive environment.

Mrs. KP teaches art as a specialist subject at Oranga School. She is a passionate and creative Art Specialist who believes that every child can be an artist. Outside the classroom, Mrs. KP creates her own works with acrylics, oils, and watercolours, and enjoys sketching people, birds, and plants. Her own artistic practice enriches her teaching, and she loves inspiring students to see the world – and themselves – through an artist’s eyes.
